Pop Princess Diaries

With two of the most prolific pop queens releasing new music and the younger ones carving their space, we’re in for a beautiful era of pop.

In late 2015, Britney Spears announced on Instagram that she was working on B9 — her ninth studio album. It had been three years since she released Britney Jean, which was her lowest debut in sales ever. So it’s no exaggeration to say she really had to perform on B9. She led with ‘Make Me…’ featuring G-Eazy. In ethereal vocals, Britney demands satisfaction; she wants him to raise her roof. The video shows Britney laughing and enjoying her job with her girl gang interspersed with shots of her in a brightly lit hallway in underwear and rocking sex hair. She brings her sex appeal and her personality to this video. Of her promotional singles for this album, ‘Do You Wanna Come Over’ and ‘Clumsy’ really shine and remind us of her quiet sultriness.

Most recently, she performed at the MTV VMA’s in a signature tiny sequinned bodysuit. In the middle of ‘Make Me…’ a cover of Bebe Rexha’s ‘Me, Myself and I’ (also featuring G-Eazy) was interspliced. This allowed Britney to include her usual amazing choreography with a more carefree, fun bop.

Ultimately the album received positive reviews and it’s fair to say that Britney is back!

A month ago, Lady Gaga posted a graphic announcing the title of her next single:Perfect Illusion’. Her fans were unsure of what to expect; her recent discography has been a mixed bag for her fans with some refusing to acknowledge her jazz collaboration Cheek to Cheek, others only referring to her previous pop album as ARTFLOP. This time round, she has hinted that her creative process has involved old favourites Red One and Mark Ronson so the future looked bright… or upbeat to say the least. The release of Perfect Illusion ushers in disco rock vibes that wouldn’t be amiss on Born This Way alongside ‘Edge of Glory’. Around halfway through the song, it garners a sense of urgency. I defy you to listen to this song without finding yourself screaming “IT WASN’T LOOOOOVE!!!” in your head for hours afterwards. This as yet untitled album is going to be enjoyable for die-hard fans and casuals. I await ‘Joanne’ with baited breath.

With regards to the younger generation of pop princesses, I’m going to give you a heads up: Demi Lovato is going to smash it. I truly believe this girl is going from strength to strength. Her last album, Confident, had ‘Cool for the Summer’ as a lead single. This was followed by the titular ‘Confident’. Her newest single is called ‘Body Say’ and if her earlier singles made you feel sexy and confident, this one will continue that theme. Apparently as soon as she finished this single, she just had to release it immediately. I hope this doesn’t mean we’ll be waiting a while for the next one because I’m very excited to see what she’s serving.

With all this being said, I just have one question: Xtina, where are you? This girl has been teasing a new album for as long as I can remember, but now she’s channelling her energy into a new TV show instead? Please.
