Relay for Life

Last week saw the eighth week in semester two commencing with a successful event that Cancer Society had organised on campus. The annual “Relay for Life” began on Monday at 12:00 and ended at 12:00 on Tuesday, and weren’t we sure as hell lucky to have such good weather!

For anyone who isn’t sure what the event entailed, the relay consisted of a constant stream of people walking around the laid out track around John Hume and the surrounding buildings. This was, of course, to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society. The two days did not only consist of the relay though. Cancer Society pulled out all the stops this year to give you a guaranteed 24 hours of craic, with a total of twenty-five events. “Go big or go home”, as the saying goes and boy – did they go big. From a “pajama hour” at 1am, collaborations with Busking Society, Dance Society, and Frisbee, spot prizes throughout the wee hours of the morning and much more, everything about the event was sure to bring even the most tired of those taking part couldn’t help but smile while taking part. It was truly a sight to behold once you saw the sheer amount of students who were supporting the day. I don’t know how anyone who took part in any aspect kept going but they did – even after the grass was cut by John Hume. Shoutout to the people who were walking the lap and suffering from hay fever. You’re all troopers.

Props also have to be given to all of those at Mars FM for organising a 24 hour broadcast. If you’re someone familiar with Studio A, I’m sure you can imagine how hot the tiny room got once it came to 2 or 3am and later. The thought of that gives me shivers, the committee who were in the studio from that time are far stronger than many of us willever be. It was amazing to see so many societies directly supporting Cancer Society’s event and it gave others a feel for what societies and clubs should be about – community. It’s not hard to imagine that students also benefitted from the feel-good emotions that come when one gives to such a cause so all in all, the event was a success from all viewpoints.

Lastly, to all societies and clubs like Hogwarts, Busking, Dance, Frisbee, Mars FM and many more who helped Cancer Society run such a successful event – fair play. From an outside perspective, it seemed to run smoothly and successfully and you should all be proud of your charity work.
